In the War on Terror, Facts are Important

EDITORIAL (Got Some Dissonance? Read it anyway)
For quite some time I have battled against the “blogospheric obsession” with Obama’s middle name. I’ve known that those who focused on his name and heritage did more harm than good, and that they were actually playing into the hands of the jihadists by amplifying the expected anti-Muslim sentiment. Yes, each and every one who insists on (falsely) highlighting Obama’s middle name, claiming that he is really a Muslim, or other shameless assertions, is helping the terrorist cause…(by the way, it is easy enough in my opinion to fight an Obama candidacy without resorting to racial and religious innuendo and falsehood).
In today’s Counterterrorism Blog entry by Evan Kohlmann (and yes “Virginia” he is an expert), makes it clear how much damage those people who insist on falsely accusing Barak Obama of being a Muslim or worse (as one blog post earlier today asserted - was the Manchurian Candidate) are actually doing (thank you Evan Kohlmann for your clarity).
Thus, the real terrorism-related problem here is how to deal with the long-term political fallout stemming from the ignorant and highly-polarized American portrayals of Islam unleashed during the context of the U.S. election, which are now inevitably being manipulated by Al-Qaida as propaganda fodder to recruit new sympathizers and terrorists. Even setting aside its obvious partisan bias, this form of reckless and irresponsible “scholarship” has no rightful place in the Christian Science Monitor nor, as Clark Hoyt rightly noted, on the New York Times Op-Ed page.
Kohlmann focuses his attention (actually ire if I may characterize his feelings) on two articles, President Apostate? from the NY Times Op-Ed page and Barack Obama – Muslim apostate? For Al Qaeda, the answer – and the implication – is clear. from the Christian Science Monitor
The problem, as Mr. Kohlmann points out, is that neither article is substantiated. A third articlecited by Kohlmann, also from the NY Times, makes it very clear that in referring to Obama (as President) as the “Apostate” is very, very wrong (headed). Clark Hoyt, the author of the third article (”Entitled to their Opinions, Yes. But Their Facts?”) spent the time to interview Muslim scholars (I am certain here, that those who have spent their blogging time making it clear that their opinion was that Obama was a Muslim, will now choose to dismiss these Muslim scholars)…and found that they all disagreed with Luttwak’s “opinion.”
So Hoyt’s conclusion is this: When writers purport to educate readers about complex matters, and they are arguably wrong, I think The Times cannot label it opinion and let it go at that.
UPDATES:
NYT has second thoughts about “Sharia smear” on Obama
“The Times Op-Ed page, quite properly, is home to a lot of provocative opinions,” Hoyt wrote. “But all are supposed to be grounded on the bedrock of fact. Op-Ed writers are entitled to emphasize facts that support their arguments and minimize others that don’t. But they are not entitled to get the facts wrong or to so mangle them that they present a false picture.”
As a blogger, I’m hardly in a position to dispute Luttwak’s right to opine on matters about which he knows nothing. But if I were the editor of an op-ed page and I were interested in publishing a provocative opinion piece grounded in an interpretation of Islamic law, I would try to get a scholar of Islamic jurisprudence to write it.
Dear readers…if some of you have consistently harped on the unsubstantiated rumor that Barak Obama is a Muslim in hiding, and that he is somehow the “Manchurian Candidate,” I urge you to re-think your views (if that is within your capability and mental capacity). As far as I am concerned, Evan Kohlmann is an acknowledged expert in things relating to counterterrorism and the jihad. I read his material, and the material of others, as often as my time permits. Kohlmann has written in words far better and more pointed than I have been able to muster til now: “…the ignorant and highly-polarized American portrayals of Islam unleashed during the context of the U.S. election, which are now inevitably being manipulated by Al-Qaida as propaganda fodder to recruit new sympathizers and terrorists.” Yes, ignorant.
You are all, and have been, playing into the hands of the jihadists who want to prove just how anti-Muslim the United States is…so, all of you have been aiding and abetting the enemy. Expecting that Obama will declare himself the presumptive winner of the Democratic nomination for the Presidency (confirming my long held conviction that Hillary would not be the nominee - unless something major occurs to change the Obama-Clinton nomination race), it is now time to focus on defeating Obama on the policies and on the capabilities of leadership. Can you do that? Frankly, I doubt it very much.

EDWARD N. LUTTWAK got the most important details correct. Sharia makes a Muslim father determinant of the offspring’s religious upbringing.
Reliance of the Traveler Book M13.2{a} deals with child custody. “If the corruptness of a child’s mother consists of her not performing the prayer (salat), she has no right to custody of the child, who might grow up to be like her, ending up in the same vile condition of not praying, ”
Book F deals with prayer. F1.2:
When a child with discrimination (O: meaning he can eat, drink, and clean himself after using the toilet unassisted) is seven years of age, he is ordered to perform the prayer, and when ten, is beaten for neglecting it (N: not severely, but so as to discipline the child, and not more than three blows).
Sharia obviously assumes that the child is a Muslim by birth, otherwise there would be no issue.
Book A deals with the knowledge of good and evil. A4.6: How Much One Must Teach One’s Children
Shafi’i and colleagues (Allah have mercy on them) say that fathers and mothers must teach their children what will be obligatory for them after puberty. The guardian must teach the child about purification, prayer, fasting, and so forth; and that fornication, sodomy, theft, drinking, lying, slander, and the like are unlawful; and that he acquires moral responsibility at puberty and what this entails. It has been said that this education is merely recommended, but in fact it is obligatory, as the plain content of its scriptural basis…The evidence for the obligation of teaching a young child is the word of Allah Mighty and Majestic,
“O you who believe, protect yourselves and families from a fire” (Koran 66:6).
Add to this the fact that Barack was registered in both public and Catholic schools as a Muslim and participated in study of the Qur’an.
Add to that his recitation, in Arabic, of the Adhan and telling the N.Y. Times that it is “the nicest sound at sunset”.
Muslims are supporting his candidacy, not calling for his head. It seems that they consider his apostasy & conversion to be insincere, a matter of political expediency.
His long association with Rev. J. Wright, a friend of Louis Farrakhan, and advocate of black liberation theology arouses suspicion.
I need to hear Obama explicitly renounce Allah’s commands which sanctify and mandate imperialism, genocide and terrorism. Even hearing that, I’d still reject him for his left wing political doctrines.
Well, Ben, as I know your point of view (and that you are one of the “truthers” who have only one point of view), then I will simply thank you for your visit. I certainly take Evan Kohlmann’s outlook on this this over your’s (and that’s a FACT, not a myth)
bloggers, non-scholars and the average american really does not have to know scholarly information about islam and barack obama. all we need is functioning common sense and perhaps a streak of patriotism (it’s post-911 remember? this is where common sense comes in), to be able to see that barack obama is a tad creepy. here’s what supports my reasoning.
there’s too much evidence for obama supporting our worst fears, and it’s hinted at all over the place, beginning with his muslim background (which is a start), his associations, then some activities of his. just read what i’ve posted here:
“administrative jihad up close and personal”
http://make-informed-decisions.blogspot.com/2008/05/administrative-jihad-up-close-and.html
or
“evidence that raila odinga made an agreement with the islamic community to hand over kenya to sharia law. why did barack obama campaign for odinga?”
http://make-informed-decisions.blogspot.com/2008/05/evidence-that-raila-odinga-made.html
there’s a lot there, especially the obama-odinga-kenya connection. you’d never find hillary or mccain caught dead in kenya supporting an individual ready to hand over the kenyan government to islamic sharia law (written about below).
on associations, fox new’s sean hannity has successfully exposed obama’s william ayers connection (a confessed american terrorist), and obama spending 20 years in a church who’s pastor (with louis farrakhan) went to libya to meet with moammar khadafi (an extremist islamic terrorist), showing they sympathsize with extremist islam. not to mention what louis farrakhan himself stands for - the leader of the nation of islam. my god, come on. obama could have chosen any church, so why that one?
on activities, by the way, did you know barack obama supported and actually campaigned for raila odinga of kenya in 2006? odinga, had he been elected president of kenya, was prepared to hand over ‘muslim-declared’ areas of the country to islamic sharia law. where is obama coming from supporting a character like this? he has all kinds of islam-supporting connections - you have to connect the dots. newt gingrich wonders about it probably (hinting at this, often saying “we know nothing about obama”), pat buchanan subtly rails on obama, sean hannity of fox news has been hammering obama VERY HARD, but not coming out and saying he’s devoutly muslim, just exposing his connections to ANTI-AMERICAN individuals. it’s by implication. it’s a matter of connecting the dots and reading between the lines. what he does he does behind the scenes for sure, as most political agenda’s are handled.
another weird activity - as chairman of the senate foreign relations subcommittee on european affairs, which has important jurisdiction over nato and therefore is critical to military activities in afghanistan, barack obama has failed to hold even one hearing as chairman. he’s virtually done nothing in that position. now talk about ‘administrative jihad’ - i believe that would be considered a win in al qaeda’s eyes.
muslims are well known to practice ‘taqiyya’, or dissimulation, which is a form of deception they use to conceal the truth. were barack obama not to have had a muslim upbringing, or not to have had all the odd associations, and not to have supported people in the islamic camp (including wanting to meet with terrorist leaders without pre-conditions) .. then yes, i would wholeheartedly think that the allegation that obama is secretly supporting extremist islam is crazy. but the evidence is there. come on now, this caution is an exercise of god-given common sense based on evidence.
honestly, senator obama has so much support because of the ignorance and/or naiveness of the 18-30 demographics that follow him. they don’t have a mature ‘big picture’ of everything, not to mention just plain being in the dark to many facts about obama. i’ve campaigned (and continue to do so) on facebook for hillary and mccain, and have seen wall posts and discussion boards repeatedly DELETED by group administrators. rather than defending their candidate they find it easier to simply delete posts. is it any wonder the obama camp is in the dark STILL about full knowledge of their candidate? it’s a post-911 era and a muslim-american is now running for president? where has common sense gone?
Hey Marcus! You lose credibility instantly when you try to tell me about September 11th and its meaning.
Obama is not a Muslim; the Ayers connection is bothersome.
Be careful who you accuse of being unpatriotic you - - - - ‘in idjit.
